CP Stealing Traffic Through Canonical Links

I find this outrageous.  They are sneakily redirecting and juicing their own marketplace versions of our products through our shops and cpshop.  Essentially they are sucking up all shops organic google traffic into the marketplace.

Check you html in your CP shop.  Search for 'canonical' and you'll see something like 'http://www.cafepress.com/mf/...' on many pages.  They're telling google that the main original page is that and to send traffic there.  I don't know who to contact about this, but they are killing us.  That I know.  We hold the burden that comes with intellectual property issues and they want to suck all the traffic away into the 10% abyss, I don't think so.

We should at the very least be getting affiliate commissions from any sales generated from those pages from google traffic which we cannot track.  They're telling google to strictly ignore our shop pages and direct traffic to the MP pages. We're getting royally screwed.

See this in their own Affiliate Program FAQ.

"I am a shopkeeper. Can I link to my own products and still get credit?
As a shopkeeper, you can get affiliate commissions by linking to your own products IF you link to your products within the CafePress marketplace. You cannot receive commissions for linking to products within your shop or any other shop.

If you would like to include your products in the CafePress marketplace in order to link to them and receive affiliate commissions, you may do so by clicking on “Edit Shop Profile” in your account and unchecking the box for the field “Marketplace, Affiliate, and Shopping Channels Opt-out”. If the box is already unchecked, your products are already opted in to the marketplace. To edit your settings, go to your store settings page."

Ugh, canonical links again. This was a problem before.

You can use the images.cgi file to do a string replacement to get rid of the canonical link html in your CPshop pages.

If the bad canonical links are in your regular shop too (they are in mine I just looked ) call/email CP and get on them about them showing up in your shop pages in the MP format, because it's not supposed to do that.

They eventually fixed the shops' links last time around to make them link to the shop not the MP, but obviously the problem is back :/

Just as sleazy as ever, I guess.

A line like this in your images file:

Code:
*||||link rel="canonical"||||garbage

should turn the canonical link tag into a meaningless tag that Google will ignore.

When you say "A line like this in your images file:

Code:
*||||link rel="canonical"||||garbage

Do you mean I create a text doc, put this code in it, then upload it to my images folder?

Sorry -- I remember this from a couple of years ago but don't remember what I did. And don't see any text file in there now.

Thank you!

P.S. I'm on Facebook reading the CEO's explanation of how they are so wanting to work with SKs now...

Where do I find the images.cgi file? It's not in my public_html folder nor in any of the shop folders... Thanks!

If its not in where your cpshop.cgi install is you can just create it and open with a text editor.

Thanks Bradley. This line also works like a charm. Marty had posted in an previous related thread.

Paste into the file and you're good to go.

Code:
*||||<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.cafepress.com/.*?/>||||<!--canonical removed-->

I found mine -- in one shop it's called index.cgi.images. I remember making that choice when I installed it... I think

In the other, it's called just shop.images.

Added the line to both. Thank you everyone!

Do you have a link to this? I couldn't find this discussion on Facebook and would be interested in reading it.

Value of the company has gone to crap since they went public.  It really is a shame what corporate greed can do.  I'd like a link too.

I'm still seeing it in the Cafepress version of one of my shops....

Also, I see this:

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

... and I'm pretty sure I didn't put it there.

EDIT: I'm not seeing it in another shop, though. Not sure what's going on.

EDIT AGAIN: It's really odd. I can only find it on product pages in this single shop.

I guess this is what you'd see in a shop that had been set to private, but it's not, and I even tried toggling that setting to see if the nofollow would disappear.

It's like this one shop was given a death sentence.

I just noticed this post. I am wondering if this is the same issue I'm having.  When promoting my domain t-shirts and products using my own cpshop products  onto social platforms like pinterest, wanelo and other shopping platforms, I noticed  the link that gets posted is cafepress.com as the main link and not my cpshop domain link for the specific product.  It's odd because I'm choosing my own domain products. It seems like cafepress is switching the links. Anyway to find out how to designate my domain and not cafepress especially since I am picking my own shop domain products!?

P.S. I looked in the cgi files and I did not find the file everyone here is talking about.  Do I create a text file, insert the code you mentioned and save it as what?

The name of the file will be cpshop.cgi.images by default, but did you re-name your files when you originally set up your shop? Like if you changed all your files to say something custom on the beginning part, instead of "cpshop.cgi.images" you renamed it to "whatever.cgi.images". That is the file and you open it up and edit it with a text editor.

(I am not sure if that would have anything to do with your pinterest trouble or not though.)
