If you're looking for a webhost with which to run cpshop, I highly recommend Bluehost.  cpshop runs great there, they offer great service, and each installation has been incredibly smooth.

Full disclosure: If you order through this link, I'll earn a commission from Bluehost (which will make me very happy ), but I'd recommend Bluehost either way.  They really are that good.

I am so glad you posted this link. My domains expire today! I signed up through your link last night, and it was really easy, but now I'm trying to transfer my domains from GoDaddy to BlueHost but some of them just won't transfer (a problem on GoDaddy's end). One domain will transfer, but BlueHost is trying to charge me $10.00 --  I thought it was free to transfer domains?? I am really confused. Did you have this same experience?

Are they trying to charge you $10 to transfer the domain, or to renew it?  I believe domain transfer is free, but if your domain is expiring today, they're probably trying to renew the domain immediately.

Just a guess.

I'm a little embarrassed now! When we haven't slept since yesterday, we don't think too clearly, do we? Yes, the domain expires today, so the $10 fee is actually to register it.  I am still having trouble transferring the other domains. GoDaddy told me to contact BlueHost. I drove a BlueHost tech support guy nuts this morning with a bunch of questions....transfer still didn't work, so I'm going to call them now.

Thanks for replying, Marty!

I took Marty's advice and signed up with bluehost for my shop. I like the customer service and the easy admin panel (novice here).

I have a Blue Host account and I have no complaints, But I feel their support personnel are neophytes. They didn't even know what the absolute path was on their own servers. I found it out entirely by accident.

I use Frontpage 2003.  I did ask BlueHost and they do support FP2003 extensions.  Would I be able to have CPSHOP in FrontPage there?  Or is it Linux hosting at BlueHost that supports it?

Frontpage kinda goes with Windows hosting.

thanks, Cindy

cpshop runs on both Linux and Windows hosts, so either way, I'd imagine.

CPshop is really easy to use. I have only taught myself web editing and got my site looking fairly decent with it. I kinda went overboard though so its loading kinda slow.

Is BlueHost still a recommended webhost? I'm looking at switching to somewhere more affordable than what I currently have, but I want to know that they are reliable and that there are no issues.

Any feedback from current users is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

i had no problems for a couple of years, but the last 3 months my sites get taken down for "processor" violations every 2 weeks; i've tried Marty's suggestion of a more restrictive robots.txt file, no luck. clearing cache helps for a few days: i would NOT recommend BlueHost any more however as this is ridiculous, nothing is different about the script: i've tried getting an additional account to sandbox the problem but no luck still. their tech support don't really care to help me pinpoint the problem. good hunting!

Same problem here with LunarPages. I get emails from them almost every day about CPU usage.

Marty, any chance of any update that might address this problem?

One of the big problems with Lunarpages support is that they seem to interpret the CPanel resource stats incorrectly.

The Cpanel docs - and to make this worse, the latest docs don't seem to even explain it - say that the "Resource Usage Stats" show what percentage of the usage you are allowed is being used.  Lunarpages treats this as the percentage of the entire server's resources, instead.

So if Cpanel says you're using 10% of the CPU resources, what it seems to be saying is that you're using 10% of what you're allowed to use:  Lunarpages support says that this is 10% of everything the server's got, and that's not acceptable.

But good luck trying to get them to notice that, to answer a question, or to respond in any way except that they'll take your site down if you don't do what they say.  The last time I went around with them on this one they never answered a single question, or acknowledged anything I said to them.

They just kept repeating the same bullet points, some of which were nonsense - like blocking visits from an an IP that turned out to be Google.

Bradley, are you still with LP then?

This is ridiculous -- I'm on the phone with them nearly every 2 weeks. Time to find a new host. Unfortunately, it seems nearly everyone has the same issue (except possibly DreamHost.)

sigh.
