cpu minutes overload

Hi Marty,

I seem to have the cpu minutes issue again.  Here is the email I received from Dreamhost...

Hello,

Sorry but we have had to end up disabling your sites on the (whelan1sg)
FTP account because you have gone over your cpu usage limit of 60cp...
you are currently at

92.77cp

I have turned your sites off using a htaccess file, so you can go to your
account and look over your sites to see what plug-ins or code may be
casuing this load. Here is some insructions that will help you find out
what is casuing this load and how to strop it, let us know when you are
ready to take care of this and we will remove the .htaccess file

DreamHost Support Team  +  support@dreamhost.com

Thanks!
Javier

I tried to cleared my cache but they just shut my whole site down.  I was wondering if there was anything you coud do.  I am in the middle of moving to San Antonio and currently living in a RV park working off wifi when I can get it.  Just tell me how much to paypal and it is done.  If you need my sign on stuff again just email me at whelan1sg@yahoo.com and I will get it on my blackberry and then zip it to you.

Thanks a bunch,
Kim

This is still happening to me too. I just got the dreaded Dreamhost email yesterday too, though they warned me before shutting down my site. (http://www.evisionarts.com)

I am having similar issues where cpshop takes forever to load, like 40 seconds or so. But it does load correctly, products and all. And I know when it's taking that long, it's using a lot of CPU cycles.

I have closed down my store just to prevent my host from suspending my account. Btw, I am not on Dreamhost.

I even updated to the May 16th release but the problem is still there.

Both of you should try these steps:

1. Manually empty your cpoutput and cpcache directories via FTP.  They're probably huge.

2. Download and install the latest update, 2.2c.

3. Go into cpadmin, and set your primary and output cache sizes to something reasonable (like 25 and 50 MB, respectively).

That should dramatically improve the CPU usage of the script.  And in the long run, it should improve the average script execution speed.

Hi Marty,

What would you recommend we set our Cache Expiration Time to?

Somewhere between 0.5 and 1 is usually just fine.

Thanks Marty!

One more question for ya. Is the cache/output size limit accumulative. In other words, if I have, say 5 stores (5 separate config files) and I need to limit my cache to 50mb, would I need to set each stores limit to 10 mb?

You don't need to limit your total output cache size to 50, but if you have more than one I would recommend you try to strike a balance between them.  Perhaps 20MB each or so.

If you've got a lot of large stores, it might be worth it to do multiple installations (/cgi-bin/store, /cgi-bin/shop, etc.).  The problem is the number of file entries in the cpcache and cpbackup folders -- too many and the CPU has to work too hard to keep track of them.

Hiya Marty,

I don't think the cache size limit is working. It doesn't seem to be limiting the size no matter what number I put in there. The output one seems to be working fine.

The cache size only limits the storage of product page files in the cpcache directory.  It doesn't affect the storage of the store/section data files.

Hi there,

In case anyone was interested, I wanted to update you on the ongoing cpu usage saga. I have 8 large stores (a mix of my own and affiliate designs). They were all under one cpshop installation. By breaking them up into separate installations (as Marty suggested) and setting limits on the size of the cpcache and cpoutput folders, the cpu usage decreased dramatically.

I just thought I would let everyone know what worked for me, in case you're experiencing similar problems.
