changing shop url - any potential problems?

Hi!

I'm going to be moving my shop from it's current home to a new domain (from shop.annmorash.com to shop.learnpysanky.com). Are there any potential issues I should be concerned with? If I copy over all the files in my /cgibin & the html files, and make the little changes in my cpshop admin screen (like my main store url would be different, etc.) -- since my cafepress shop name is still going to be art_by_ann, I don't really need to do anything else, is that right? This won't affect anyone who is selling my works through their shops in the affiliate program, for example?

Hope the answer's a good one, thanks!

If you have people linking to your cpshop installation, moving will break all of their links and would be bad if you have affiliates linking to you that way.  It would be just like renaming your shop in your cafepress admin.

However, if you haven't marketed your cpshop site to affiliates and only market linking directly to your shop at cafepress, it wont effect your affiliates since they have nothing to do with your cpshop site.  Affiliates would only be effected if thats where you recruited them to link to.

The only places that I can think of offhand that you would have to change would be the URLs in your cpshop admin.  I pretty much do a copy of an existing cpshop install when I create new cpshop sites with no problems at all.  And thats copying from one domain to another.

The only things I would worry about in your case is if you have marketed your site to affiliates and not your shop and you are also screwing up your search engine listings by moving to a different domain.  Is it possible to run them both for a while?  Maybe set the meta tag that controls the search engine crawling on the one you are phasing out to have the search engines not spider it for a couple months?  That way in a couple of months your old shop may have completely dropped off the radar and the new one have the rankings so when you give the old one the axe, you aren't totally in the dark with the search engines..

Just some thoughts...

Hi!

Yes, I can run them for several months concurrently, I'm starting early in hopes of preventing breakage, allowing time for search engines to find my new home, etc.

I didn't actively recruit affiliates, but when I do search engine checks, it looks like I'm affiliated with three shops (I've only been in contact with one of them). But I can contact these people just in case there's any issues.

So, do the meta tag thing to phase out the search engines from my old site to the new one, and contact the people who have affiliated through me, and otherwise there shouldn't be any real difficulties. Good to know!

Thanks so much for your help!
