HostGator Suspended CPU too high

I'll start by saying im not on the latest version, but the one before. Now hostgator keep telling me my sites are suspended because CPshop.cgi is using up too much CPU.

It happens randomly (IE when im not touching the site) the rest of the time cpu usage is at 0-1%

So how do i fix this? Havent had a problem in 2 years and now all of a sudden they keep moaning and blocking my sites.

Check your server logs...I suspect it's a web bot crawling your site using aggressive spiders.  My biggest problem was TwengaBot and Shopwiki bots....block them in your htaccess file using these commands:

Code:
order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from 82.192.74.2
deny from 82.192.74.3
deny from 82.192.74.4
deny from 82.192.74.5
deny from 82.192.74.6
deny from 82.192.74.8
deny from 82.192.74.9
deny from 82.192.74.11
deny from 82.192.74.13
deny from 82.192.74.14
deny from 82.192.74.16
deny from 82.192.74
deny from 92.241.165.236
deny from 108.59.0.251

How would you know if there are bots (like Google or bing) who you would want to keep? Look up each of these addresses/ I have a similar problem with CPU usage with LunarPages.

Log in to admin control panel for your web host server.  Go to your domain name, click on server logs.... Google seems to usually be an ip address that starts with 65.x.x.x. (66.249.67.59)

If your server logs have a ton of usage and history, inspect further to see if it's Google or Yahoo or Bing.  It will tell you.

In some cases, you just have to know.

If it says "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)"

Trident/4.0 is Google.  Do not delete this one.

This one is obviously Bing: "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; bingbot/2.0; +http://www.bing.com/bingbot.htm)"

This one is Yahoo: "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Yahoo! Slurp/3.0; http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp)"

Keep Google, Bing, Yahoo.  Keep others as well, but if you see hundreds of lines of text in your server access file that isn't one of the big three...start blocking the other guys for slamming your web server too hard and aggressively.  Only do this if you feel the bot is being too aggressive on your web server.

Twenga is the WORST.  I hate those guys....I sent them tons of emails and nothing would work, they still would not repect being taken off their databases.  So I had to block them myself 1 year ago.  They almost ruined 2010 Christmas for me.

Thanks, KM. Now, I've been using a robots. txt file and some spiders aren't paying attention (like BaiduSpider.) Is it better to use the htaccess file?

I tried creating a .htaccess file by opening a text doc, copying the bit in yellow from the previous post above, saving it as htaccess.txt, uploading to public_html folder, renaming to .htaccess... then it disappears. Where does it go? Is there another way to do this? Thank you.

It's there, you just can't see it.  It's hidden by the file system by default.

For those who may not know, Google bots can only be slowed down from Google tools -- they do not pay attention to .htaccess.

Bing was actually the one causing my issues. Unfortunately I have to block them.

Lunarpages just told me my count was too high. I added the crawl delay to my robots file.

For the .htaccess, I added Kaptain Mike's yellow code at the bottom of the .htaccess file already in this account. But this was there and I don't know whether to delete or leave it (I left it for now):

<Limit GET POST>
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from all
</Limit>
<Limit PUT DELETE>
order deny,allow
deny from all
</Limit>

Anybody know what this is or if it will conflict with the new code?

Thank you.

Oops, when I added the yellow code:

order allow,deny
allow from all
deny from 82.192.74.2
deny from 82.192.74.3
deny from 82.192.74.4
deny from 82.192.74.5
deny from 82.192.74.6
deny from 82.192.74.8
deny from 82.192.74.9
deny from 82.192.74.11
deny from 82.192.74.13
deny from 82.192.74.14
deny from 82.192.74.16
deny from 82.192.74
deny from 92.241.165.236
deny from 108.59.0.251

My site went down. I went in and deleted the code and it came back up. So I guess I can't have both.

Can anyone help me merge the two or know which one to use...? Thank you.

I made the change to the robots file so maybe that will be enough.
