Hi You all,

I'm thinking about what our futures hold! Not being proficient at the back-end of CPShop, my being an admin here would be fruitless.

Are there any among you who might take up the mantle? Perhaps for $? Maybe we could pay a monthly fee or an annual membership fee?

We wouldn't have to stay on Marty's server unless he was ok with that -- wonder how we could move all these great resources here...

Also, if there were ongoing support, perhaps we could actually grow the ranks.

Any other ideas for continuing what we're loathe to give up?

Thanks!

I was just thinking this over last night.  I don't know much about PERL or SEO, but I do know about hosting and design.   I worry about the day cafepress does a significant change and suddenly all cpshops across america break.   Even basic guidance and tips would help to re-engineer Mary's code.  I have always been someone who can break apart code and figure it out, yet I cannot write from scratch.  I only know Foxpro 2.6 proficiently, and nobody uses that anymore.  My concept of visual foxpro is laughable.

Anybody else want to weigh in here?

I know a fair amount about SEO so I could certainly chime in there. But a change at CP breaking all the CPshops would be a disaster.

How about this: how can we best ease out of CPshop? Is there a way to host our CP products on our own domains? I've never investigated that.

I'd like to keep my domain and great SEO -- I rank 5th on google for a few of my keywords and I am loathe to give that up.

But I don't want to sit around twiddling my thumbs until the entire thing breaks either.

Putting it in a WP blog would be super but I'm not good at hacking. Maybe we could hire a coder/designer who could figure out a WP solution. Marty?

I've tried to figure out the affiliate stuff at CP and posted in those forums but no help so far. I'm not sure the CP affiliate system is working.

CP affliate code is strictly through commission junction's code.  I sent a few emails to marty last week, still no response.

I am willing to take over but until I get full cooperation and permission to do so, I am not going to start learning perl yet.

So, what "is" everyone who runs CPShop doing? Are we all going to wait until it breaks or stops working and then close our shops?

CP isn't going to do anything to help and I'm not a programmer, so I'm hoping others on this board who are more savvy in these areas might share how they're preparing for the inevitable.

Right now, I have no plan "B" and it's frustrating to say the least.

Yes, very frustrating! We are hoping someone can step up and take over. KM is investigating and talking to Marty, so we shall see.

I've asked on the CPShop forums, too, to see what CP's plans are, if any. They could break it and we'd be out.

It's a big thing to ask and I'm prepared to pay anyone who can keep it going. I DO NOT want to redo all my shops, lol! Oy vey.

Still no word yet from Marty, and I emailed him almost a month ago.  I am not going to even attempt to start learning perl unless I get a green light.

I am willing to pay a monthly fee to keep CPshop going. I mentioned that to Marty long ago. I always thought he should have charged, not just the one time fee, but a monthly fee to keep it fair because he devoted so much time and effort.   I also invested time and hard work since 2006 like so many of you. To have it not work one day is very scary as I primary work on promoting my website store not cafepress.  We should be informed if there is a chance that someone else can manage it rather than wait until we lose everything one day and that's it. Not fair to those who invested so much time and effort.  I hope Marty sees this message and perhaps let someone else take over or perhaps charge a monthly or yearly fee, whatever works for him, to keep it going. Thanks...I will watch this forum for future news.

Sad day, indeed for all.

I am afraid I cannot decipher the nonsensical Cafepress API engine and the horrible formatting of the xml that is returned when making requests.  Unless I can figure out a way to import the store shop data into a database table or file...this is not going to happen on my watch.

I've already made arrangements on my own site to redirect pages and sections to my cafepress store directly.  I will be using my website as a image server and css code override to match themes on my cafepress shop and that's it for me.

I've done some experiments with the API and I've thought about the common CPU usage problems we've had with  CPShop and it looked to me as though the best approach really is to start from scratch, using our experience with CPShop as a guide rather than a template.

Anyone who does this will lose the URLs of the old CPShop pages, of course, and that's a concern. But in order to have something that will continue to perform well into the future I think we'd have to cut that link with the past.
