Hey all,  I'm wondering how i can skip this first page that the program generates (and what is the best method).  I dont know jack about SSI... but here is what i want to do.  I am going to sort products by type (ie shirts, mugs...) and by collections (which i may have to make all new store names to do)  and load them into an iframe on my page by way of a drop down menu system.  But how would i skip that first page... so if you click on the 'shirts' link, you see shirts, and not this default generated page?  Am i making any sense here at all??  lol

If you just link to the specific store, you should be fine.  You only get the homepage when you link to it.

You might want to:

  • turn off the breadcrumb linktrail
  • use store aliases
  • create an empty cptemplate.html file, with just a <[content]> tag and nothing else
  • make sure you use the pop-up windows for the shopping cart, to avoid the problems CafePress has with frames

That's all that comes to mind immediately.

Here is a good resource for learning how to set up SSI.

http://www.carleton.ca/~dmcfet/html/ssi1.html

Basically, you would need to change the .htaccess file in the directory.  If you do this and don't want to have to edit all .html files in that directory or subdirectories, create a different subdirectory in the www root and modify it's .htaccess file.  All files within that directory can only be viewed on the screen that have a .shtml extention and all files that have a .html extention can be called to be included in a .shtml file.

Example:

Filename tryme.shtml

Code:
<head>
Here is my content from another file</p>

<!--#include virtual="/temp/anotherfile.html"--></p>

<b><i>That's It!</i></b>

</head>

Filename anotherfile.html

Code:
This is all that I would need to put in this file.

Displayed:

Here is my content from another file

This is all that I would need to put in this file.

That's It!

SSI can help to keep display seperate from data.

Continue reading is SSI intrigues you.

Here is another neat thing about SSI, a first level .html file can include calls to a second level .html as long as the first level .html file is called upon by a .shtml file.  Think object oriented for a moment.  This concept really can expand your ability to maintaining an entire site!  You can now have your .shtml display file, calling it's formatting from a .html which in turn makes calls to additional .html files that contain the logo, banner, copyright statment, etc.

What can this do?  Your display and content would never have to be changed and your template can be modified on the fly to give your site a whole new look.  Add a cascading style sheet to the mix, and goodbye Front Page!

Evrsoft.com put out a really good, I'm sorry, not good - excellent freeware site text editor (1st Page 2000) that includes most, if not all of W3C's reference set.  There is a whole section that talks about SSI.
