I guess I am still a little confused about this: I want the filter links to actually be in the left sidebar AND I want them to remain there even after I click on one of them to bring up the <[content]> within the main part of the page.

Is this something I will need to handcode manually or am I missing something?

Yes, if you want sidebar links, then you have to place them there yourself (in the template).
