Getting Prod Description in Meta

So I have a product template that is different then my normal cptemplate. I notice that my meta tag description for the product is set to my default description in admin.

My question is, can I use the <[producttext]> tag in my product template next to the meta description so that it pulls the product description into the meta tag area?

E.g.

Code:

Code:
<meta name="description" content="<[producttext]>">

Which would give me the following for my Bloodhound MOM Sweatshirt:

Code:
<meta name="description" content="Giant letters that spell Bloodhound MOM to match this dog breed's giant heart. Includes a beautiful full body shot silhouette of this wonderful dog breed.">

That way, Google sees the correct information for the individual product pages when indexing.

Or, is there a different tag I could use or some other way of going about this?

You can use tags within your META description, but the [producttext] tag according to the tags list can only be used on product thumbnail pages: "<[producttext]>  - The product description (for product thumbnails only)". If I remember correctly, it won't do anything on a product page. Some tags only work on thumbnail pages, some only work on product pages, some I have never been able to get to work. I've created several of my own to get around all this.

It involves hacking the script to create your own tags, pulling data from places, manipulating existing data, etc. Not for the faint of heart.

What would be nice if some of the existing tags were a little more flexible than they are so they can be used throughout more, and if there was a tag for each text area in cp where we can enter product information. Last time I looked it seems there was some missing.

Sorry, that probably doesn't help you a whole lot, but it at least answers your question, I hope.

Oh, I forgot, your example above is understandable, and a good effort, but it still going to leave you with the same META description across all products for that particular design, right?

For the past several months Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) has been reporting duplicate titles, meta descriptions, too short meta descriptions, etc. Duplicate titles were always bad, duplicate meta descriptions were believed to have helped send your pages to the supplemental index (when it was as so) and know there's a lot of chatter about why Google has started reporting these "issues". It is always best to have a unique title and meta description on EACH page. Very difficult in this current environment, as well as lots of other environments, too. It's just hard to do.

Thanks!

I removed the keywords and description meta tags from the product pages so that Google will pick up the first paragraph of text rather then a duplicate meta tag from CPShop.

I also went ahead and made sure to update all the meta tag fields in CPShop under the sections so that they would not have the primary meta tag information for the site as well.

The problem only came to light because of Google Webmaster Tools. Upon uploading a recent sitemap, I was told that I have over 5,000 duplicate meta tag descriptions. That was enough to get my attention and work to fix it.

Thanks again!

Yep, that gets a lot of peoples attention...    Some pay attention, some don't . Those who pay attention will be the ones to most likely benefit... the others... well, less competition.

Here's a hint, try using the pages title within your meta description. It's different for every product if you leave the stock CP text after your own. However I've had an ongoing issue with this for as long as I can remember, sometimes cpshop doesn't get it, and it makes things look stupid.

Oops, I forgot, you're welcome.

Wow... I have been working on this same damn problem since I even installed CPshop months ago. After a long hiatus, im trying to fix it again right this minute.

I posted a topic a few times and no one ever replied. I too made a sitemap with google and noticed the same problem. Every single link indexed is the same thing. It's the same as not being indexed at all, since not one page text is being read, thus not being able to be searched.

FINALLY I have an answer.... THANK YOU!!! Not exactly understanding what I have to do, but hopefully I can reread this and figure it out.

EDIT:

I always heard this, but HOW do you even edit that on each page through CPshop?

Ok, so I was researching this more and it seems that everyone is using the "Product Page HTML Template" option. I have never used this nor touched it since I didnt understand how to. So im thinking this is the answer to my question, right?

So, what you did hazel was take a direct copy of your template, simply removed the meta tag section only, and placed it as your default Product Page HTML Template? Thats what im guessing, at least. Or is there more to it?

Hey all,

I know this is my first post, but I just started working with my cpshop and already ran into this problem. I had 19000 duplicate descriptions

Here's the way I worked around it. (it's kinda wonky and can put a long list in your meta if you go deep)

On my template I kept the <[keyword]> and <[description]> tags in.

Then in cpadmin for both the keyword and description tag here's what I put:

keyword:
<[title]>,keyword,keyword,keyword

description:
<[title]>! Description of my store!

Someone earlier mention that the <[title]> tag was one of the few available to use in meta.

I'm hoping that it's enough to get google to think that all of the meta descriptions and keywords are different on every page.

Now it's time to go create another sitemap to upload

If someone has tried this and it didn't work for you please let me know so I can pull it off mine.

Cheers for your post Suckairscuba, that's really helped with what i wanted to achieve. Did you find it worked okay for you?

I feel having tonnes of pages all having the same title, description and keywords has meant google has dropped one of my sites. LEts hope this fixes it!
