I was hoping all you wonderful CPShop users could offer some advise on how to make my thumbnail pages look better - and literally how - I've tried a few things, but found limitations when using the sortorder.  I do not like how the top lays out.

Example

Thanks

I think what I don't like is all the straight line text at the top which pushes the products so far down.

I'm thinking what I would have to do is enter html on the cafepress description side to show a thumb of the design next to the description for each design.  Daunting task though.

Well, as I said it look fine to me, but now I understand what you mean.

Me, as a customer I very hardly read anything on a website when I'm searching around. I just look at pictures and click on anything clickable to see where it takes me. Thats the way I shop. (Click and look, Click and look) Only when I have desided I want that item them I read the description in the product page (wish in your case also looks fine to me).

In my opinion for cutomers like me you don't need to explain what to do like the following text, I think you could eliminate it and will bring the products a little bit up to the top:
"For detailed product information including, sizing, available colors, and detailed product description, click the product image links below"

For me it is not nesesary. I just need pictures to look, links to click and a clear way of where am I in case I want to come back for more. Wish is perfectly fine the navigation bar you have at the top.

But of course that's just me.

Also in my opinion big banners for a logo it takes unecesary space. Here I'm attaching a example template that it could help to explain what I mean.

If you are worry about loosing your style, don't worry because with the background image you have it does lets people know.

But again this is my opinion.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the advice!  I did remove the instruction text.

I wouldn't mind revamping my header.  What I would love to do is figure out a way to put the sortorder links in the in a different area rather than directly above the actual thumbnails.

Those links themselves take up several lines.  I broke up the "if" statements in the sortorder file so links for certain products didn't appear if the design wasn't available on those products. (done with limited success)

I also had started to create small images for product categories - a clock for a clock, a shirt for a shirt, etc.

I'll go stare at it for awhile and see if I can come up with something

Here's an example of someone putting the links for the sortorder somewhere else other than over the thumbnails.  How is this accomplished?http://www.cultclassicts.com/cgi-bin/shirt.cgi/3616005339.cultclassicts.1147482+soul-glo-t-shirt.html

I don't know if I'm wrong but I believe it is in the same place at top of the products images it's just that if you compare you layout ant the size of your logo you will see it is at the same place you have it.

That shop have the logo in the left side, the blue navigation bar, the search, the phone number and the links that said "Unofficial Movie / TV Inspired Tees & Funny T-Shirts" all in the head of the layout. The other links are at the right side of the layout under the "Free Shipping" Button.

If the shopkeeper move the blue navigation bar on top of the logo and the other links at the bottom of the logo it will push down the items the way it does in yours.

I'm sure if you move the links or make the navigation bars to left or right they would make the space for the items to move up.

I attached you another layout that could give u another idea.

And also one of our fellows shopkeepers has a website for templates if you want to check it out is:  www.logomasterpiece.com
They are not my style but they are fantastic.

Thanks - you are being wonderfully helpful.

I think I should have been more specific - or I didn't understand you properly - which would be par for the day.

In my previous post, I meant to specifically reference the links under the free shipping button and under the heading "on this page."  These are links from the sortorder file that are enclosed in if statements. Which is where my link text that I'm talking about (below) comes from:
[ Journals & Cards | Prints Posters, & Signs ]
[ Pins/Buttons | Mugs | Stickers | Magnets ]
[ Home & Office | Clocks & Ornaments | Pets | Bags & Caps ]

I used this post to get that far:
http://www.marty.net/cgi/marty/board/messageboard?board=cprequest&action=display&num=1188867237&start=0

So, I was really wondering how that shop managed to get them to the sidebar.  Upon further examination, I think that it looks like coordinates were used in the sortorder file to specify the location of that menu.

Forgive me if I'm being dense.

Oh, and I will be changing my header to rearrange to one of your suggested layouts  when I get the chance  - that is simple to do.  I would just like to move those sortorder links as well, which I haven't figured out yet.

I created my navigation bar with a free tool I found online. I can't find it now but I found this:

I just looked at your site.  I love it.

I totally agree that my header logo takes up too much space and I'll fix that.

You don't use the sortorder file to sort your products though, which is what I had originally.  I started using it to sort the products within the particular design because I wanted to show that there were more products than just t-shirts for a particular design right off the bat instead of going through all the pages to find a coffee mug at the end.

The sortorder does have limitations though.

I use the filters. If you go to my page

http://www.inkmyskull.com/index.cgi/2620889413.inkmyskull.5848162+search-by-products.html

you can see what I did. At my shop at cafepress I have the links at the bottom of the page but at my hosting website at have it on the navigation bar at the left.

And to move the links at the left or right side you just gave to use one of the colums. I notice in your html code you have a colum for the browse by product and another colum for the links at next to it. Then after that you are using a "td colspan=2 for the content. I believe you need to keep it two colum and use one for the navigation and another one for the content.

Lets see if one of the good friend expert maybe can tell you better.

Ah ha.  Too Funny.  We are talking about 2 completely different things.

Filters and Sortorder aren't the same thing.  I just realized my filters are broken because I never updated my file from my test site.  Brother - too many projects.

The sortorder file (index.cgi.sortorder - mine is designshop.pl.sortorder) is different than filters.  Mine looks like this:

Code:
<a name="top" id="top">

By the way, I like what you did with the filters on that page.  May steal your idea at some point

The sortorder file allows you to specify the order in which the products display on your product thumbnail pages - with headings or without headings.  You can separate the products out like you did on your shop by product page - but it controls EVERY product thumbnail page.  The downside is that all your products display on the same page - at least I haven't figured out a way to paginate it.
