Problems when renaming cp files

I am trying to make it so that url's in my shop do not advertise the programming behind it. I prefer to not have *.cgi or *.pl in the URLs at all. I have my modrewrite working for links that I make but the cpshop links still have the http://storename/cpshop.cgi/... in them.

I figured that the way around this was to perhaps rename the cpshop.cgi, cpshop.cgi.config and cpshop.cgi.images files as instructed in the cpshop installation tutorial.

When I do this I get the following error when attempting to access my shop's site:

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I'm assuming this has something to do with my htaccess config. Does anyone have a solution to masking the cpshop extension in the urls?

There's a few ways to do this.

1. Leave your filenames alone (with an extension) but leave the extension off all your onpage links, then use a RewriteRule in htaccess to add the .cgi or whatever extension back on.

2. If you only have a few files you can use FilesMatch in htaccess to denote which extensionless files should be run as a .cgi script. If you have a lot of files this becomes ineffcient somewhere along the way.

3. Use ScriptAliasMatch in htaccess along with a directory path to your directory the extensionless files are in.

If you google something like "extensionless cgi" you should be able to find examples of each to get you started.

ETA - The error you're getting is probably because your server doesn't know what the extensionless file is or what to do with it, you have to tell it that it is a .cgi file (or whatever) so it knows how to process it. You can't just drop the extension and expect the server to know what to do with it.
