Can anyone tell me why the sidebar on this page starts out twice as wide and then immediately jumps back to 150 px?

www.belovedbeans.com

It finishes at the width that I want it. I just would love to get rid of that annoying stutter each time it loads.

Thanks in advance.

My guess would be that somewhere in that table structure there's at least one table or table element that is not explicitly sized that could be. Inside the table element is possibly an image that should be statically sized (both height and width specified) that is not.

As the browser goes through the table structure, rendering the table a bit at a time, it gets to that element and something is forcing it to make it as big as possible, at least until it gets to the end of the table structure and finishes downloading all the images, and finalises the actual size of the element.

Or something like that.

I went through the code and looked for opportunities to make column widths and image sizes specific. I can't see whats missing. I know you are right... Just can't find the ommission.

You were correct Angel. The image that wasn't explicitly dimensioned was the "stat counter" image. It is one of those free services that tracks your traffic.

Thanks for the clue. I love to hate code.

<grin> Glad you figured it out.

You might consider moving that java outside the table, placing the statcounter code just before the </body> tag.

Every now and then statcounter experiences server problems. Or some node on the 'net gets bogged down.  When that happens, the browser's rendering engine will bog down. Particularly on IE browsers.  The rest of the table might not resolve until the statcounter image resolves.

Just a thought.

I think it functions fine if it is outside <body> and before <html/>

I now use the invisible option which does not involve redering any image on the page itself. Is there a reason not to put it outside body if there is no visible graphic that must be rendered on the site.

Hmmm. Not that I can think of, offhand. So long as it works...

Scratch that last post. It *might* be an issue placing your script between </body> and </html> if the remote site goes down.

I used to call an anti-parasite javascript, loading it from a remote site. (The script runs some tests on the browser to determine if known parasitic software is running and displays a warning if one is found.) Occasionally the remote site would come under DoS and other attacks, bogging it down.  It would cause an issue with IE browsers which would stop dead upon reaching the element containing the javascript.

I'm not sure how browsers will react to a script timeout between </body> and </html>. If it's just before </body> then the browser just waits, and waits ... and waits. If it's after </body> there may be other issues.

I put it after <body> and before the final <html>. What do you think?

Yeah, that's the spot I'm not sure about. Maybe I'm just being overcautious. It might not be an issue, but it's definitely a non-standard placement.

I've got a dozen or so of these kinds of things (amazon, statcounter, google...) installed on a dozen or so sites and the installation instructions nearly always say: "just before the final </body> tag."  I've never been instructed to place any code anywhere after </body>.

ymmv,
