Okay... I have set up three sites..
I have had not one... (maybe one)... affiliate sale.

I am obviously doing something incorrectly. Before you even look... I admit... my coding skills are limited.

What are my OBVIOUS failures at:

http://www.belovedbeans.com
http://www.theclevermouse.com
http://www.dlgbabywear.com

Hey, it is a fair question...

1. How are you sending them traffic?
2. How much traffic have you sent to them so far?
3. How are your stores performing in search results, and which search terms are you targeting?

I am advertising with Google Adwords. Actually, each site only sees about 50 hits a day. Not much eh?

Two of the sites have link pages and I am trying to generate reciprocal links.

Think it is just lack of traffic?

Think I should invest more in Adwords for a while?

Also curious... How much time should I invest in obtaining reciprocal links? Are they really as important to SEO as the net community would like to purport?

50 visitors a day?  Or 50 pageviews a day?  50 visitors a day isn't bad, though it's not very much.  50 pageviews a day isn't much at all.

Either way, it seems like your audience might be small.  It's hard to optimize when you haven't got a decent enough sample size to work with.

And reciprocal links have limited value nowadays.  Inbound links have much more value than crosslinks.  You want to get people to you, but you really don't want to have to link back to them.  It's one of the ways that search engines are able to discern sites of actual value and/or interest.

Hey Renderin,

Things you might consider:

Animated graphics make for a pretty disturbing visit, at least for me.  I don't even want to look at a page containing them.

Also, I used to place google ads on my shops, figuring the ad revenue would come in addition to sales.  Sales didn't really take off until after I removed the ads.  If you look at other successful shops (eg: www.CultClassicTs.com), you'll find no advertisements.

If you really want to keep your ads, at least make sure they're very relevant to your content, and the graphics/layout of the ads works within the overall design of your site.  With the clevermouse.com page, the colours and design of the ads scream at you and compete with the primary purpose of your shop -- to sell interesting mouse pads.

Finally, you may be choosing products that are naturally slow sellers.  Over the past few years on my variety of sites I've sold, for example,

  6     mousepads
  96   2.25" buttons
  238  Dark T-Shirts
  155  License Plate Frames

The plate frames are the biggest surprise, particularly considering that very few of my designs translate to the format, so I have very few options for plate frames. And yet they consistently outsell most other products.  Moreover, they support a fairly high markup ($5) and, therefore, generate a high ROI.

On the other hand, I'm thisclose to discontinuing mousepads in my stores.  They're wasting space and offering my customers little more than a distraction.

Who would have thought it?... I may be featuring the wrong stuff... But, honestly, there doesn't always seem to be a rhyme or reason. Looking at my own Cafepress stores, baby onesies and t-shirts seem to be my mainstay. www.dlgbabywear.com will survive. The mousepad store will be allowed to languish for a while longer.

However, I suppose given the ease of setting up a new CPShop (thanks Marty), I will be setting up a Buttonville in the near future.

Thanks for the input.

Well, there's some rhyme and some reason.  The hot-selling plate frames typically feature peace signs.  I think frames are a great accompaniment to anything that works as a bumper sticker -- not everyone wants to put stickers on their car and a plate frame is an excellent alternative -- even an improvement.

And it shouldn't be any surpise that a baby wear store would sell a lot of onesies.

Re: mousepads.  I think there's a reason behind their waning popularity: With the growing popularity and accuracy of optical mice, mousepads just ain't so necessary.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but...the "call customer service to order" at the bottom of the sites is a BIG leak. I was told by Loxy on the cp forums when she was at cp that phone orders don't convert to affiliate sales.

My hope is that if the customer uses the order number provided in their cart, the appropriate affiliate information will migrate into the order. No?

Nope.  CJ tracking doesn't work with phone orders.

i would work on your SEO.  i see "coffee", "coffee lover" but barely see words like coffee t shirt, coffee lover tees, java gifts...stuff like that.  people searching for Coffee aren't going to find what they're looking for at your site and peopel searching for coffee shirts aren't going to find you at all because you don't have those keywords.

A couple things that may help.
I notice on belovedbeans under "Library" you have links going to pages outside belovedbeans. First i would make sure to open these pages in a new window so sales don't "get lost" and navigate away from your site.

Also i see most ,if not all of the links do not have a "recip link".
Many will tell you reciprical links are a thing of the past, but much of my traffic and sales come from recip links.
If they don't link to me i don't link to them.

I love the site concept... I'm a coffee junkie
