Affiliate Coding Through CPShop

Curious - if you set up your CPShop to allow for accepting external PIDs, then will the normal CJ code and old CP code still work?

The reason I ask is because I have a ton of affiliates (because I do a lot of non-profit work) and I am now moving all of my stuff to CPShop - including changing the links on my CP store (on the CP domain) to point to my CPShop. I want the external affiliate link to work for them on my new store without worrying if they need to update their links.

Will everything still work correctly?

Can you give me an example of "the normal CJ code and old CP code"?  It might work, but it also might depend on how you've configured your shop.

Sure thing Marty.

An example of the old CP affiliate link: http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness?pid=XXXXXXX
(where XXXXXXX is their CP PID)

An example of the CJ affiliate link:
http://www.qksrv.net/click-XXXXXXX-10463747?URL=http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness
(where XXXXXXX is their CJ PID)

On my affiliate page, I have them do the latter and need to know 1) if the two examples above will still continue to work with CPShop and give them their commission correctly and 2) do I need to change my affiliate page to tell new affiliates they should be adding ?cjpid=12345678 to the end of the URL?

Thanks!

If they're linking to your cpshop, they should be using the cjpid=XXXXXXX syntax in the links.

And going through the standard CJ links won't work to your cpshop -- they'll only point successfully to the cafepress.com domain.

So, you are saying that http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness?pid=XXXXXXX and http://www.qksrv.net/click-XXXXXXX-10463747?URL=http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness will not work with CPShop and they will not get their affiliate cookie to set correctly unless they use http://www.angelcove.us/?cjpid=XXXXXXX correct?

Well, this:

http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness?pid=XXXXXXX

is pointing to the CafePress site, and not your cpshop site, so it won't work.

And this:
http://www.qksrv.net/click-XXXXXXX-10463747?URL=http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness

ultimately redirects to the URL= value, which in this instance is also at the CafePress site.  And CJ won't let you point this to your cpshop domain (and it probably wouldn't work correctly even if it did).  So it's not going to work either.

And even then you'd need to have the affiliates pointing to a cpshop page for the cjpid variable to work:

http://www.angelcove.us/cgi-bin/store/cpshop.cgi?cjpid=XXXXXXX

This isn't a cpshop limitation per se; it's just kind've the way the web works.

You could also use some javascript on non-cpshop pages if you wanted people to be able to point to your homepage directly with a cjpid.  I've got some code here that should work:

Thanks for hanging in there with me Marty. Just a couple of more questions with this.

I use a template for my domain.com address and the same template pushes to cptemplate.html. So, would I just add it to the template (as the script is) in order for it to work. If so,

1) where should I add it so that it will not conflict with search engines (I know some JS does)?

2) would I need to tweak the code any in order to get it to work?

3) would the new URL affiliates use look like http://www.angelcove.us?cjpid=XXXXXX in order to place the cookie appropriately on a non-CPShop page (e.g. index.html)? I want to make sure to update my affiliates.html page with the correct copy and paste code.

Thanks again!

1. Lower in the page is better.  The end of the file should be fine, just don't forget the appropriate <script> and </script> tags.

2. It should work as written, though, to be perfectly honest, I haven't tested it as thoroughly as I could.  If you want, you can let me know when you've got it in place on your site, and I'll make sure it's working correctly there.

3. Yes, that's correct.

Ok Marty - I have copied and pasted the JS code right above my </body> tag in both my domain.com template and my cafepress.com template. Can you please test it through both and let me know if it works correctly?

CPShop: http://www.angelcove.us
Cafepress Shop: http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness

Thanks!

The JS code should be in your cpshop installation, and works just fine.

It should not, however, be in your CafePress premium shop.  All the standard linking rules apply there, including:

http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness?pid=XXXXXXX (where the X's refer to the CafePress Legacy PID)
and
http://www.qksrv.net/click-XXXXXXX-10463747?URL=http://www.cafepress.com/donorawareness

So I did not need to put the JS code in again or are you stating that it works fine now that I put in the JS code in it?

As for putting it in my cafepress store - should it be removed? I was thinking if someone was linking to the cafepress.com store and clicks on one of the links (which brings them to my domain), I wanted the cookie to follow.

Sorry but I have a bit of a cold so it may take me a few posts to fully understand something.

Let's see:
1. The javascript should be in your cpshop.
2. The javascript should not be in your premium shop.
3. If someone clicks from your premium shop back to your cpshop, the cookie will not necessarily follow.  Cookies don't work that way -- they're domain-specific.  If the cookie is set at CafePress, it's not set at your domain as well.

Got it! So I will remove the JS from my cafepress.com store but leave it on my domain.com store.

Thanks!
