introducing cpshop 1.3c

Not a big update -- this is mostly a real fix for the "Sale Price" issue.

This version also includes the beginnings of cpshop's logging system, where you'll eventually be able to track pageviews, users, and other such details. For now, cpshop will keep raw logs -- in the next version, you'll be able to process them.

changes in cpshop 1.3c
(see below for a more involved explanation of these changes)

  • improved Spanish language file
  • fixed "Sale Price" formatting issue
  • fixed Currency Converter text bug
  • added logs
  • other minor bug fixes
how to upgrade
  1. Be sure you upgrade to or install a full version of cpshop 1.3b before installing this update!
  2. Unzip the contents of cpshop1.3c-update.zip.
  3. Upload the contents of the zip file to the cpshop directory on your server.
  4. Create a new sub-directory called "cplogs", and make it writable (usually with "chmod 777 cplogs").
  5. Test your store.
about the changes

improved Spanish language file

Special thanks to JP for contributing the new and improved Spanish language file! (The only Spanish I really have any familiarity with is courtesy of various local Mexican food venues.)
fixed "Sale Price" formatting issue
I've tried to keep the strikeout appearance of the sale prices, though I had to nix the red text -- mainly because some people may use a red background on their sites, which would cause the sale price to disappear. I think you all should be happy with the results, either way.

I've also added a "Sale Price" entry to the language files. Feel free to customize it in the custom language files, if you desire (instructions can be found in the language files themselves).

fixed Currency Converter text bug
The correct text now appears in the Currency Converter. A tiny bug, but tricky to fix.
added logs
Eventually, this will be a great feature; for now, it's just a beginning.

There are three levels of logging: simple, detailed and none.

  • Simple logs will be able to tell you two things -- how many total pageviews cpshop has served, and how many of them were entry pages (meaning pages not originating from the same site, such as pages linked in from from another site). Simple logs use up very little disk space on your server, 2 bytes per pageview.
  • Detailed logs will offer much more information: pageviews, unique visitors, what stores/products are being viewed, and what pages are linking to your site. This extra information takes up considerably more disk space: anywhere from 30-300 bytes (or more!) per pageview, depending on the circumstances. If you're really tight on disk space, yet have a lot of traffic, you might want to skip this option. (A hint: using aliases with multiple-store-ID stores can dramatically decrease the disk usage.)
  • None means no logs, period. I imagine you already figured that out.
If you choose to turn on logging, then cpshop will begin to log statistics immediately. When the next version comes out, it'll include a mechanism for examining your new data treasure.

the last word(s)

Sigh.

This has truly been a taxing few weeks. I lost my grandmother during an emergency hip surgery; I competed in the Alcan Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival and did quite poorly, though I had fun; I've had to completely move all my email services to a new system and server; and I'm preparing to deal with the ending lease on my car, my father's preparations for a hopeful pallidotomy, and my impending move to Northern California. It's all been very tiring.

That said, I'd still like to apologize for the slowdown in upgrades to cpshop. I know it's already pretty feature-rich, but there are still several things I'd like to add, and real life has just been getting in the way.

I still would like to add the log-reader, a search feature, a random-product javascript-drop, and, if CafePress ever fixes the color-POST issue (are you listening Jeff?), a built-in shopping cart.

I'm also considering spending some time putting together other scripts, or packaging and selling some of the many scripts I've already written. (If you have any requests for other scripts, let me know, and maybe I'll go with it.)

I guess I just have to stay busy until football season starts up again.

As always, let me know if you have any problems with this, either via or posting on the message board.

Regards, Marty
